Girls’ Soccer Loses in State Semifinal

On Saturday, November 12, the Centennial Eagles Girls’ Varsity Soccer team played the Urbana Hawks in the 3A State Semifinals at Linganore High School.

Although temperatures approached freezing, this very important game brought many fans from each school to the stadium.

The first half was scoreless. Centennial had multiple opportunities from senior Jasmine McCree, junior Kelli Dunagan, and sophomore Mckenna Griffin, yet they could not finish. The Hawks didn’t have as many opportunities, but also could not put one through the net. This was mainly because of the Eagles’ strong defense, led by seniors Sandy Eichhorn, Madi Griffin, and Cristina Narron, and junior Claudia Pilcher.

Mid way through the second half, Urbana had a breakaway that led to the first and only goal of the game. There was some controversy about this goal because it could have been offsides. With about twelve minutes left in the game, Centennial tried their best to tie, or even win, the game. They had some chances, including a shot by Narron that hit the crossbar. The Eagles were running low on time, and had one final chance to score. A corner by sophomore Ashley Deng could’ve tied the game for Centennial, but it was kicked out by an Urbana player. The final score was 1-0, Urbana.

Centennial fought until the end and had a great season, winning the Regional Finals for the first time since 2004. The Eagles hope to have a good season next year with many returning players.

Girls’ Soccer Falls to Howard

On Friday, September 16, 2016, the Girls’ Varsity Soccer team lost their first game of the season, 1-0, to the Howard Lions.

The beginning of the first half was dominated by the Centennial offense. With a merciless defensive side stonewalling Howard’s goal attempts left and right. Centennial’s strong offense was led by juniors Kelli Dunagan, Kirsten Wikner, senior Jasmine McCree as well as help from sophomores Ashley Molz and Mckenna Griffin.

By the half, the Centennial defense led by junior Claudia Piltcher had fought off Howard’s many attempts to score, and went into halftime tied at 0-0.

The Eagles came out strong in the second half, determined and unforgiving on the Lion’s defense. Despite Centennial’s energy, Howard was able to score off a corner kick at the beginning of the second half, making the score 1-0.

While Centennial dominated for the majority of the game, and put 28 shots on goal, they were unable to make it onto the scoreboard.

The Eagles will face off against River Hill High School on Tuesday, September 20.

Girls’ Lacrosse Senior Night

On Tuesday, May 3, Centennial Girl’s Varsity Lacrosse defeated the Oakland Mills Scorpions 18-0.

Seniors Izzie Chausse, Peyton Conley, Samantha Courtemanche, Allie Durkee, Devin McIntyre, and Megan Oliver were honored with flowers and gifts. Senior managers Rachel Braun and Reese Western were also thanked for their contributions to the team during the season.

The Eagles offense generated a multitude of opportunities and the defense kept the Scorpions off the scoreboard.

McIntyre had four goals, Courtemanche had three, Chausse and Conley had two, Durkee, Oliver, juniors Laurie Bracey, Gabby Fairley, and Madi Griffin, along with sophomore Claudia Piltcher and freshman Marissa Lagera each had one goal.

Girls’ Lacrosse Defeats Hammond in Season Opener

On Tuesday, March 22, Centennial Girls’ Lacrosse defeated Hammond 17-1 in their opening game.

Led by the offense, Centennial showed their stick skills and maneuvered around the Hammond defense. Seniors Devin McIntyre and Samantha Courtemanche were involved in multiple offensive plays and McIntyre led the team in goals.

Junior Madi Griffin played excellent defense on Hammond’s star player and kept her away from the goal, leading to Hammond’s single goal.

Centennial’s 17 goals were scored by nine different players. McIntyre had four goals, Courtemanche had three, junior Laurie Bracey and sophomore Kirsten Wikner had two each, and seniors Allie Durkee, Peyton Conley, Megan Oliver, junior Griffin, and sophomore Claudia Piltcher had one each.
