On September 27, Centennial capped off spirit week with an extended pep rally. At the end of the day, students gathered to watch musical performances, dances, tug-of-war, drill teams, and a powder puff game. Powder puff, an annual football game with junior and senior girls, was held during the pep rally this year rather than after school. Just as in the years before, the pep rally helped build excitement towards the homecoming game and dance.

Seniors Attend Annual Crab Feast

On Wednesday, September 25, Centennial seniors ate, danced, and socialized together at the annual Senior Crab Feast from 6-8pm in the cafeteria.

Seniors spent most of the first half of the night enjoying an all-you-can-eat menu featuring crabs, turkey, ham, green beans, macaroni and cheese, and more. Towards the end of the night, however, many ditched their crab mallets for the dance floor.

Keeping with tradition, the majority of seniors wore homemade crab-themed t-shirts to the event. These t-shirts, along with all of the crabs and dancing, helped this year’s senior class start the year off with a sense of unity.

During Eagle Time on Wednesday, September 25, the gym flooded with students anticipating Centennial’s first ever boys volleyball game. Following the structure of the traditional powder puff game, eighteen junior and senior boys went head-to-head.

With people packing the student section, a display of USA-themed school spirit and excited chants could be seen.

Juniors began with an advantage as Paul Russell took the stage. With a 12-5 lead, the seniors needed to make significant strides in order to catch up. Senior Shawn Kruhm had a strong serve, scoring over the juniors and beginning their comeback.

“They had us in the first half,” said Kruhm. “We played really well, it was a well deserved win.”

After 20 minutes of intense back and forth play, the clock ran out and the seniors won 29-27. The senior student section cheered as they flooded the gym floor, creating a dog pile on the court.

While the boys played with great sportsmanship and intensity, Centennial’s first ever men’s homecoming volleyball game will go down in history as a triumphant win for the Class of 2020.

Centennial Football Continues to Improve Despite Tough Loss to Loch Raven

On Friday, September 20, Loch Raven High School handed Centennial Football their third loss of the year by a score of 29-12. The Eagles had their highest scoring game so far this year, but a strong offensive performance in the third and fourth quarter for Loch Raven secured the victory.

In the first quarter, the Eagles were able to disrupt the Loch Raven offense. They held Loch Raven to just a field goal and went into the second quarter trailing only 3-0.

However, Loch Raven opened up the scoring in the second quarter and extended their lead to 16-0 after scoring two touchdowns. For Centennial, the offense was having success moving the ball down field, but could not seem to get the ball into the end zone.

After halftime, Loch Raven continued their strong offensive performance. Centennial was able to cut the lead to 22-6 after a two yard rushing touchdown early in the fourth quarter.

Late in the fourth quarter, senior quarterback Malik Chester threw his first touchdown pass of the game, but it was too late for the Eagles to comeback and the Eagles lost by a final score of 29-12.

The Centennial Football team looks to win their Homecoming game this Friday, September 27, when they take on Aberdeen High School.

Centennial Field Hockey Gains First Win of the Season Against Atholton

Words & Photos: Shawn Kruhm

On Friday, September 21, the Centennial Field Hockey team defeated Atholton by a final score of 2-0.

The Eagles had possession of the ball for the majority of the first half. As a result, the girls created countless opportunities on offense.

Despite the tremendous plays from Centennial, the game remained scoreless at halftime.

Nearly 15 minutes into the second half, senior Sara Ferrara broke the ice, scoring the first goal of the game. Sophomore Sarah Arcuri assisted the impressive goal.

To extend the lead and eventually put the game out of reach, senior Eliza Andrew scored the second goal of the game with 10 minutes remaining.

Following Andrew’s goal, the defense locked down and senior goalie Casey Stratton finished the game with five total saves and a shutout.

The girls will take on Liberty High School on Monday, September 23, in hopes of winning their second game of the season.
